By: Boluwaji Daso
“It is better to fail Honorably, than to allow the invigilator to fill malpractice form for you” - Mr. Idowu Akinrosoye.
Examination Malpractice is a disease that has infected the Educational system of many students in the tertiary Institution of learning as the Result of Student's perspective on the street slangs that state “Education is a Scam” but “School is a Scam” rather.
Realistically, Education in the tertiary institution nowadays is actually in a chronic situation. Infact, many institution of learning management have been trying to curb this unlawful habits but all their efforts are in futility.
In this Article, I will be deliberating on the pain of Examination Malpractice.
What is Examination malpractice?
For you to understand clearly the meaning of examination Malpractice, I’ll like to ship in each word after the other. “Examination” is a formal trial (test) of a person or persons knowledge ability on a subject or skill. In the higher institution, the trial which is regarded as test is usually conducted at the mid-semester before a student will be able to Graduate.
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, “Malpractice” simply means, “law careless, wrong or illegal actions by someone who is performing a professional duty”. It simply depict incompetence or lack of negligence in the act of a professional in a specific field.
From the definition given above, “Examination malpractice” is defined as an inappropriate or illegal conduct by a candidate of an examination with the intention of passing the examination. In some aspect parents are responsible for the moral life of their children, do you think they should be blamed when a candidate of an institution engaged in Examination malpractice?
Examination Malpractice has became many students daily bread because of influence. A well trained boy or girl from a good background that has the intention of becoming somebody in life has now been mingling with the wrong peers all in the name of civilization. My friend is good in this aspect likewise myself. Why must I read when I can inscribe on a sheet of paper? Why must I read when I can involve in corruption? This is more reason why many students find it difficult to attend Lectures in higher institutions of learning often because of what they believe in. Moreso, a lot of students who are involved in Examination malpractice do not know what exactly is the gravity of what they are doing in which it could eventually results to Rustication,Suspension for many months or academic punishment etc by the institution management or authority.
However, many graduates from either University, Polytechnic, college of education level etc cannot even dispense their knowledge or defend their good grades results in the presence of people often because of the illegal activities performed by them in examination hall during their time/years in school. It is very much sardonic of how many students find pleasure inscribing an answer in a small sheet of paper (an expo) while hiding it underneath their trousers or shirts in other to avoid the Supervisor’s wrath of filling malpractice forms for them.
Examination Malpractice is never an option. Imagine a bonafide student of University of Lagos (UNILAG), university of Ibadan (UI), University of Nigeria (UN) or better still a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Kwara state Polytechnic, etc that cannot express him/herself diplomatically or possibly involve in an effective communication process by originating an ideas to be communicated between/among his/her friends is very disheartening. Whereas all they spent their lives in the school environment is a wasted effort, thinking they are Big Boys/Girls.
Numerous students have been blindfolded by the era of technology. Many students believe that dedicating time to reading is a waste of time, many believe in the use of Google search engine to obtain information about something on the World Wide Web, in other to find solutions to particular Examination Questions by taking Along with them their cell phones, Smartphone, etc into the examination hall. What do you think such students become?
They often end up being a subject of anxiety, nervousness and many more after concluding their OND, NCE, HND, BSC, etc as a result of their inability to engage people from various fields of academic associations. Furthermore, this is not limited to taking micro chips into the examination hall alone but also, sleeping for grades, paying for grades is another form of examination Malpractice.
With this, government and management of every Institution of higher learning should try as much as possible to bring out ideas that can eradicate this social vices. And any student that is caught in this unlawful act, the school management should not be lenient with such an individual in other to dispense that as a great lesson to others.
In a similar vein, just like the biblical mene mene tekel uphasin, it is Audible to the deaf, visible to the blind that Examination Malpractice is not a gain but a pain……
SAY “NO” TO EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
